Why we love our City cotton

City is our cotton poplin quality with a subtle sheen and a hint of stretch to fit with our design philosophy of “easy care, easy wear, wear anywhere” style. We call the quality City, as it has the quiet luxury touch required to stand out in the boardroom.

Cotton is a light, soft natural fibre primarily composed of cellulose. This fluffy fibre is extracted from the seeds of the cotton plant in a process called ginning. The fibre is then spun into cloth, where it can be woven or knitted. Poplin is the name for a woven weaving technique. Together, they make up a fabric known as Cotton Poplin which is predominately used for shirting.

Our City quality is mixed with Nylon and Elastane for comfort and movement stretch, giving us the best quality to use within a range of fabulous styles. As natural fibres are commonly favored in Australian fashion, we were keen to source a quality that also utilised technical advances in synthetics which are now giving the cotton fibres improved benefits for wear and care.

Here's why we love City cotton:

• The best of both. Having a predominantly natural fibre interwoven with high quality technical synthetic gives you the “champagne” best. City is a blend of Cotton 70% Nylon 27% and Elastane 3%
• Poplin is durable. Due to the structure of cellulose most plant-based fibres are very strong, therefore providing cloth that can withstand frequent wash and wear. You can machine wash City at 30 degrees and hot steam/iron, without a worry of shrinkage or damage.
• It has a smooth surface. When weft and warp threads are of the same material and have a similar number of yarns, the fabric has a smooth woven surface with no noticeable ribbing giving it a subtle sheen. This sheen also adds a level of luxury to the look and feel by giving a crisp appearance.
• Does not crease easily. Garments made of City are easy to iron and do not crease easily, making them great for all day wear.

• Light in weight. Because the fabric is cool and lightweight, it’s perfect for summer clothing as it doesn’t lock in heat, due to its breathability. Also light in weight in garment form, its great for minimal packing whilst travelling.
• Always fresh. Cotton poplin is breathable, natural, non-irritant, and “fresh feeling” on the body.
• Versatile. As the fabric can easily be dressed up for more formal occasions or dressed down for casual wear, it makes it suitable for a wide range of events and settings. This season’s trend of head to toe looks in co-ordinating fabrics and colours, work especially well, and we especially love it for shirtdresses, pants and tops.
• Eco-friendly. Natural fibres usually have a smaller environmental impact than purely synthetic fibres because natural fabrics do not use as many chemicals during the production process.
